Holi is a spring celebration also known as the festival of colours or the carnival of love. Holi is an important fiesta to Hindus. It is celebrated at the end of the winter season on the last full moon day of the lunar month Phalgun which usually falls in March, sometimes in late February. It is an olden Hindu religious festival which has become trendy with non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well as citizens of other communities outer surface of Asia. Holi celebrations begin with a Holika fire on the night before Holi where public get together, sings and dance. The next morning is where participants play, follow and colour each other with dry crush and colored water, with some carrying water guns and coloured water filled balloons for their wet fight.

whole country wears a festive look when it is time for Holi celebration. Market places get abuzz with activity like various hues of gulal can be seen on the roadside days before the festival. Pichkaris in original and current design too come up every year to attract the children who wish to collect them as Holi memorabilia and of course, to wet everybody in the town.

Womenfolk too start making early preparations for the Holi festival as they cook lots of gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the family. At some places mostly in the north women also make papads and potato chips at this occasion.

Great excitement can be seen in people on the next day when it is actually the time for the play of colours. Shops and offices stay closed for the day and public get all the time to get crazy and whacky. Brilliant colours of gulal fill up the air and people take turns in bucketing colour water over each other. Children take particular pleasure in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing dampens balloons. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies – applying colours and exchanging good wishes. Songs, dance on the beat of dholak and delicious Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day.
